Visit of the Relics of St. Bernadette 21-22 October

VISIT OF THE RELICS OF ST. BERNADETTE TO MULLINGAR 21st – 22nd October

St. Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79) offers a profound example for young people, teaching that faith, humility, and perseverance can transform even the most challenging circumstances. Born into poverty, Bernadette suffered from poor health throughout her life, yet her unwavering trust in God never faltered. As a child, she shepherded sheep in Bartres and longed for the sacraments, but her First Holy Communion was delayed due to missed catechism classes. Despite these struggles, Bernadette discerned her religious vocation to the Sisters of Charity, while in the hospice in Lourdes. Her deep faith shone through in the 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle in 1858. Though she faced scepticism and hardship, Bernadette remained firm in her mission, revealing Mary’s message of prayer, penance, and healing to the world. Later, she retreated to the convent of Nevers, where she embraced a life of prayer and service, suffering quietly with illness until her death at 35 years old on 16 April 1879. As the relics of St. Bernadette travel through Ireland for the first time, young people have a unique opportunity to connect with her spirituality. Her life reminds them that even in the face of adversity, faith can lead to an extraordinary journey with God, inspiring them to follow her example of humility, simplicity, and unwavering devotion.
